About Unity In Action
Our Mission
Unity in Action is a grassroots nonprofit based in Oakland, California, committed to creating pathways to stability for individuals, families and pets impacted by housing instability, incarceration and systemic marginalization. We believe that dignity, mutuality, and community care are the foundation of lasting change.
Our programs are volunteer-based, meaning the populations we serve—unhoused individuals, reentry clients, and displaced families—actively participate in uplifting their own communities. This is not charity; it’s a mutual benefit model where service becomes a gateway to support, connection, and transformation.
Through trauma-informed outreach, community events, and direct resource distribution, we offer access to:
- Volunteer-for-service programs that provide food pantry, free clothing, document retrieval , laundry, clipper cards, showers + grooming, etc (Hands in Motion Program)
- Temporary foster and pet boarding to reduce shelter overcrowding and reunite displaced individuals with their animals (Paws in Motion Program)
- Free Free Child care & emergency foster for families in need (The Village Table)
- Crisis hotline and response alternatives to policing through our community hotline (UIA Hotline)

Hands in Motion Program
Hands in Motion is Unity in Action’s dignity-driven service program for individuals facing or emerging from homelessness. Participants engage in hands-on community care—like walking shelter dogs or cleaning parks—while gaining access to essential resources like clothing, meals, hygiene kits, and gym showers. It’s empowerment through action, and a path toward stability and belonging.

Paws in Motion is Unity in Action’s short-term foster program supporting shelter dogs and the people who care for them. We provide temporary homes, healing environments, and community connection—while empowering individuals through meaningful service and visibility. Every paw in motion brings us closer to adoption and dignity for all.

The Village Table
Village Table is Unity in Action’s afterschool and summer program offering free meals, school supplies, games, and creative workshops for kids—plus backup childcare for families facing housing instability or financial hardship. It’s a safe, joyful space where children thrive and caregivers find support.
UIA Hotline

The Village Table
Unity in Action Hotline is a community-based alternative to emergency services for non-emergency situations involving homelessness. Focused on de-escalation, dignity, and direct support, the hotline offers compassionate care while reducing unnecessary law enforcement involvement.
